Seeing through language – some examples

Dec 11
2009

A few weeks ago, my brother sent me a list of made-up words that are attributed to Mensa and the Washington Post (but I can find no substantiation of this).  Regardless of the source, I thought they provided powerful examples of how we “see” with language, not with our eyes.

For each of the two lists below there is a short explanation of how the words were generated.  As you read them notice what happens as you read first the word then its meaning. There is a recursive process of the word referring to the written meaning and the written meaning referring back to the word that results in the word allowing you to “see” or distinguish something that didn’t exist for you before.

The result… Continue reading

Seeing through language, not your eyes

I grew up thinking that there was only objective reality, a world “out there” that existed apart from me, and that the quality of my life, particularly how smart I was would depend on how well I was able to learn and describe what already is.

When I became aware of those that questioned the very notion of objective reality I dismissed them as weird and not worthy of a rational, logical person as yours truly.

It wasn’t until my early thirties that I was exposed to the notion of reality as created through language vs. reality as merely described through language.

The distinction of language – not just communication – as what makes human beings very special on this planet, has made a world of difference… Continue reading

Re-learning to type – the DVORAK Typing System

Nov 22

Let’s see … what could I do to make it even more difficult to get things done.  Oh, I know.  I could work with one hand tied behind my back, or I could switch over to the Dvorak system.   In case you hadn’t heard, the QWERTY system was designed to slow down typing speeds because the original mechanical typewriters would jam at words per minute above say 70words-per-minute (wpm), or 100 wpm.

I had heard about the advantages of the Dvorak system for many years – faster typing speeds and less risk

When You Can’t Trust a Trapeze Artist

A few weeks ago, I was at a birthday party and I introduced myself to some friends of the birthday girl. They didn’t look alike at all and I was genuinely surprised when they insisted they were siblings. They all had really great energy and I engaged in a very lively and I thought genuine discussion about them and their family.

One sister said she was a trapeze artist, currently living somewhere in Florida, the other was an actress in New York and the brother was a neuroscientist who studied at Columbia.  They had another brother who they said was a “doper” (meaning he was into drugs).  So, a trapeze artist (don’t meet to many of them), an actress, a scientist and a druggie.  Nice mix I thought.  Seemed… Continue reading

What’s the proof of your education?

Sep 27
2009

Just listened to Diane Ravitch, the Research Prof. at New York University, talk about the perils of the current focus of test scores as the measure of how well America’s children are being educated.

Apart from the apparent shennanigans going on around manipulating test scores to meet Government standards, her assessment that the focus on test scores is ineffective to the goals of education reminded me of my own educational experience.

Despite two degrees, I no longer consider them as “proof” of my education.  You see when I grew up, and this still seems to be the case according to Ms. Ravitch, the focus was to pass exams, to “get” your education.   Your education was also referred to as that “piece of paper” that diploma… Continue reading

Are you Cancerous?

Sep 17
2009

If you take a telescope and look upwards and outwards, you’ll soon gain a healthy perspective on how small, how insignificant we and our planet are in the grand scale of our galaxy and the universe.  You’ll be similarly amazed if you take a microscope and look inwards; there’s an entire universe of cells, atomic and sub-atomic matter and energy that pervades anything you look at.   Everything it seems, is part of something else.

Nice to know, but what has this do with with your perhaps being cancerous? (Metaphorically speaking of course.)

Well, most of us don’t think of ourselves as being a part of something else.  We think of ourselves as individuals that stand alone and apart from our environment, we see ourselves as separate from and having… Continue reading

It’s all present

Yesterday it was a fantastic day in New York.  I walked cross town for half an hour to meet a couple friends for lunch.  On the way back, I choose to listen to some sing-a-long music I have on my ipod and there I was maneuvering amongst thousands of Time Square tourists, all lost in their own worlds and private conversations and thoughts.

At lunch my friends commented on how nice New Yorkers were, how surprisingly helpful and how beautiful the city is.

We agreed that there is so much to be thankful for, so much possibility and opportunity for anyone, everyone, to create and live absolutely fabulous lives.   And then I thought of the dark figures portrayed in the news and Hollywood movies who are dedicated… Continue reading
